The play is based on the novella of the same name by Ephraim Sevela — an outstanding Jewish writer, screenwriter, and film director, author of dozens of books and screenplays beloved by readers around the world. Ephraim Sevela is the author of famous books such as "Legends of Invalid Street," "Stop the Plane — I'm Getting Off," "Monya Tsatskes — Standard-Bearer," "Men's Talk in a Russian Bathhouse," "The Parrot Who Speaks Yiddish," and the novel "Toyota Corolla." After emigrating from the USSR in 1971, Sevela lived and worked in Israel for several years, where during the Yom Kippur War he volunteered to defend the country and was wounded. The Moscow Jewish Theater SHALOM carefully preserved the author's inimitable voice and turned the famous novella into a vivid theatrical event. The production is created in the genre of interactive theater and storytelling, where the boundary between stage and audience nearly disappears. The actors communicate directly with the audience, drawing them into the action, and sometimes the spectators themselves become part of what's happening. This story is full of humor, unexpected twists, recognizable human characters, and genuine emotion. It is a play about friendship, love, staying true to oneself, and a person's remarkable ability to preserve dignity and hope no matter what. The play was nominated for the national Golden Mask theater award in two prestigious categories at once: directing and acting. The SHALOM Theater is one of the most notable Jewish theaters in the world. The theater is experiencing a vivid creative upswing. For many years its artistic director was the honored artist Alexander Levenbuk — the creator and keeper of the theater's unique tradition. With the arrival of the new artistic director and stage director Oleg Lipovetsky, SHALOM has opened a new chapter in its history: while preserving its connection to Jewish culture and respect for its own roots, the theater is gaining new energy, a contemporary artistic language, and attracting a new generation of performers, directors, and audiences. "Monya Tsatskes — Standard-Bearer" is one of the signature productions of this new theatrical wave: a lively, witty, and modern play in which Ephraim Sevela's classic prose sounds fresh, light, and deeply human. The play features the theater's leading performers — bright, talented representatives of the new generation of the stage. The actors create dozens of characters, instantly transforming themselves, changing the personalities, ages, and fates of their heroes. Their energy, skill, and lively dialogue with the audience make every performance special.
