Country: Israel, 2006 Director: Ola Jonker Cast: Shahar Cohen, Halil Efrat โฑ Runtime: 75 minutes ๐ Language: Hebrew, English, Italian and Dutch ๐ฌ Subtitles: Hebrew Israeli Cinema, DocAviv Festival 2006. Shahar (36), an unemployed filmmaker at the start of his career, leads an idle lifestyle much to the displeasure of his father, Suleiman, a modest and strict 82-year-old Yemenite Jew. As an incentive for his son's professional future, Suleiman suggests he make a film about the Jewish Brigade in which he served. Shahar isn't enthusiastic, but when he discovers by chance that his father apparently got a Dutch girl pregnant, he decides to make the film in order to find his father's lost descendants, hoping to ease somewhat the burden of his father's criticism. The two set out on a journey along the Brigade's route in Europe, recounting its historical story, while Shahar continues his secret investigation to track down his relatives, up to a surprising discovery. The film reveals, with humor and sensitivity, the complex relationship between Shahar and his father, and addresses fundamental questions about father-son relationships, the tension between myths of heroism and reality, and between memory and historical truth. The film won the Best Israeli Film Award at the DocAviv Festival 2006 and the Ophir Award for Best Documentary Film that same year. 75 minutes, Hebrew, English, Italian and Dutch, Hebrew subtitles.
