Iraq and Jordan – artificial creations of the British Mandate. Lecturer: Dr. Gustav Meiseles After the end of World War I, the region became part of the British Mandate for Palestine. In 1921, Britain decided to separate the area east of the Jordan River from the Mandate territory and establish there the Emirate of Transjordan, which gained independence in 1946 and became "the Kingdom." Iraq was established as a British mandate over the territory of ancient Mesopotamia in 1921, uniting three separate and conflicting provinces. Over the years it was taken over by military men and the Ba'ath party, a process that ended in 2003 with the fall of the Saddam Hussein regime, and since then its future as a state has remained unclear. Lecturer: Dr. Gustav Meiseles, an orientalist and expert on the history of the Middle East, Islam, religions and current affairs. From the lecture series: Near–Far, the Neighbors We Don't Know. About the series: the countries of the region and the vibrant, intriguing world we live in, from a historical, social, cultural and political point of view. We will get to know the countries of the region from their birth, through their development, to their current problems. An open subscription to the lectures can be purchased by phone: 04-8227850, or on site.
