Taiwan's Oscar submission. Shu-Fen, a single mother, returns to Taipei with her two daughters after several years' absence. She plans to open a noodle stall in the city's bustling night market. Her elder daughter, I-Ann, works at a shady kiosk, carries on an even more dubious relationship with her boss, and has a tense relationship with their mother. But five-year-old I-Jing is captivated by the colorful market, which becomes her playground. Family tensions deepen further when the grandfather warns I-Jing, who was born left-handed, not to use her left hand, because that hand "belongs to the devil." After years of close collaboration with Sean Baker, many of whose films have screened at the Haifa festival, Shih-Ching Tsou directs her first feature film, which Baker produced, edited and co-wrote. The film examines themes of family, tradition and modernity through a young girl's eyes, painting a tender, funny, amusing and touching portrait of a family as turbulent and noisy as the city they live in. 108 minutes, Mandarin, Hebrew and English subtitles.
